Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) Skills Scan Explained: What to Expect, Common Concerns, and How We Support You
If you’re considering the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) route—whether full scope or domestic—you’ve probably come across the skills scan and wondered what it actually involves.
For many electricians, this stage can feel uncertain or even a bit intimidating. The reality is very different.
This article will walk you through:
What the skills scan involves
Why it exists
Common fears (and why you shouldn’t worry)
FAQs around knowledge gaps, experience, and eligibility
How we support you through the process
Our aim is simple: to make sure you feel confident that you’re in the right place, with the right support, and a clear pathway forward.
What Is the EWA Skills Scan?
The skills scan is the first step in confirming that the Experienced Worker Assessment is the right route for you.
It’s made up of three key parts:
1. Candidate Background Form
This is essentially an in-depth CV, but more structured.
Full route: Covers at least 5 years of experience
Domestic route: Covers at least 3 years
You’ll outline:
The type of work you’ve been doing
The environments you’ve worked in (commercial, industrial, domestic, etc.)
The range of installations and systems you've worked on
This helps us understand not just what qualifications you have, but how you’ve actually used them.

2. Skills Scan Self-Assessment
This is where you reflect on your own experience.
For each area, you’ll rate yourself as:
Limited
Adequate
Extensive
Unsure
You’ll also list your qualifications so we can confirm recognised prior learning (RPL)—this ensures you’re eligible for the EWA route.
3. Technical / Professional Discussion
This is a relaxed, two-way conversation (usually on Teams), where we:
Talk through your experience
Explore your knowledge
Ask relevant, practical questions
Confirm that you’ve been actively using your qualifications
This session is recorded as part of your long-term evidence and quality assurance.
Why Do We Do a Skills Scan?
It’s not about catching you out.
It’s about making sure:
You’re on the correct pathway
You’re ready for EWA
You won’t struggle further down the line
Your qualification is valid, robust, and secure
We’ve seen what happens when providers skip proper checks—people can end up with delayed or even withdrawn qualifications. That’s not something we’re willing to risk for our learners.
What If I Don’t Meet the Experience Requirements?
If you don’t have:
5 years (full scope)
3 years (domestic)
You’ll be guided toward the NVQ route instead.
That’s not a setback.
It’s simply the correct pathway for your current level, and it still leads you to becoming fully qualified. We’ll help you understand that route just as clearly.
Let’s Talk About the Biggest Fear: “What If I’m Not Good Enough?”
This is by far the most common concern—and it’s completely normal.
Here’s the truth:
👉 The skills scan is not a test you pass or fail
👉 It’s a conversation and assessment of where you are now
👉 We are here to support, not judge
Most electricians we speak to:
Underestimate their experience
Haven’t put it into words before
Feel unsure simply because it’s been a while since studying
Once you relax into the process, it becomes much easier.
Why Honesty Matters in Your Self-Assessment
It can be tempting to mark everything as “extensive”—but that doesn’t help you.
Being honest allows us to:
Identify any gaps
Recommend the right support
Set you up for success
Remember:
This process is about getting you qualified properly—not quickly pushing you through.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I have gaps in my knowledge?
That’s completely normal.
It usually means some top-up training would help.
A very common area is:
Inspection & Testing
Periodic Inspection
If it’s been a while since you studied theory, a course like 2391-52 can make a huge difference.
If you’re not sure, speak to your training provider (whether that’s us or someone else) and explore your options.
What if my qualifications aren’t listed
If you don’t have any of the qualifications listed in tables A, B or C of the skills scan then contact TESP via this link and it will give you a form to complete. You also have the option to send copies of your qualifications that you do have via an email address, info@the-esp.org.uk and they usually take up to 5 working days to reply and help. So don’t panic if this isn’t an instant response.
What if I have gaps in my practical experience?
In an ideal world, you’d go back into an apprenticeship—but we know that’s not always realistic.
Instead:
Speak to your employer
Be honest about areas you haven’t done recently
Ask to be involved in specific jobs (e.g. containment, testing, fault finding)
For example:
“It’s been a while since I’ve done galvanised containment—can I get involved in the next job?”
This is one of the best ways to build confidence quickly.
Do I need to be doing everything on the list?
No—but you do need a broad range of experience, including:
Different cable types
Containment systems
Accessories
First fix and second fix
Full testing and fault finding
Testing is where most people feel less confident—again, this is where further training can really help.
Do I need a training provider before completing the forms?
No.
You can:
Complete the forms independently
Then submit them to your chosen provider
Once we receive them, we’ll:
Review your qualifications
Arrange a Teams call
Carry out your technical discussion
What kind of questions will I be asked?
We keep it relevant, practical, and up to date.
Examples might include:
Insulation resistance testing (especially around sensitive equipment)
Fire safety requirements (e.g. preventing premature cable collapse)
Changes in circuit protection over time
We’ll also tailor questions to your experience.
For example:
If you’ve worked in hospitals, we might ask:
“What changes have you seen in circuit protection in that environment?”
What if I “fail” the skills scan?
You don’t.
There is no fail or pass.
If EWA isn’t the right route right now, we:
Recommend additional training
Or guide you toward the NVQ pathway
This is about supporting your journey—not blocking it.
Do you charge for the skills scan?
Currently, we don’t charge if you’re planning to complete your EWA with us.
In the future, as demand grows, we may introduce a small deposit due to the time involved (typically around an hour).
What if I can’t find my qualifications?
We can help.
There’s a system called the Learner Record Service (LRS) that training providers can access.
However:
It doesn’t always go back far enough
Older qualifications (especially from large employers) may not be recorded
If that happens, we’ll work with you to find a solution—sometimes this may involve an accelerated route based on your experience.
Can I train with you if I’m not local?
Yes.
You will need at least one on-site observation, but:
👉 We travel to our learners
Location is not a barrier.
How long does the skills scan take?
Around 1 hour, usually via Teams.
We prefer this format because:
It allows recording
It provides strong evidence for quality assurance
It protects your qualification long-term
English isn’t my first language—will I struggle?
It can feel harder, but we’ll support you.
You can explain things in your own words
We’ll guide the conversation
We’ll help draw out your experience
Confidence builds quickly once you settle in.
Why does the discussion have to be recorded?
For quality assurance.
It ensures:
Your knowledge is evidenced
Your qualification is secure
There’s a clear audit trail
Without this, qualifications can be questioned or even withdrawn later—which we absolutely want to avoid.
How quickly can I enrol after the skills scan?
Very quickly.
Because we’re a small, experienced team:
We can complete your scan
Review your documents
Get you enrolled the same day
You’ll receive:
Your invoice
Payment plan options
A clear next step
Final Thoughts: You’re Not Alone in This
The skills scan might sound formal—but in reality, it’s a supportive, structured conversation designed to help you succeed.
We’ve done this many times, and we understand:
The industry
The different backgrounds electricians come from
The confidence gaps that can exist
Our role is to:
✔ Guide you
✔ Support you
✔ Make sure you’re on the right path
And most importantly—
help you get qualified properly, with confidence.
If you’re unsure where you stand, the best thing you can do is start the conversation.
