Micro Learning in Electrical and Construction Training: How Bite-Sized Learning Benefits Adult Learners

Micro-learning has seen a recent rise in popularity with platforms like TikTok and Instagram being ideally suited for two-three minute bitesize lessons.

I would like to look specifically at how micro-learning helps adult learners and mature career changers to boost their time from novice to expert. Specifically adult learners in construction.

What Is Micro Learning and Why It Matters for Adult Learners

Micro-learning is when larger topics are broken down into more manageable chunks.

The chunks of learning can then be available for when it best suits the learner. This flexible approach is especially helpful to mature career changes, those with family commitments or anyone with a lower attention span.

Micro- learning works well when put into more traditional learning as a blended approach.

Basically our target audience are adults who are either electricians looking to add skills to their CV or mature career changers looking to become electricians. Often we need to revise areas that may have been glossed over from school and make up for the skills fade that may have occurred in that time.

There are many benefits of micro learning as part of an overall blended approach.

Benefits Of Micro-Learning To Adults

  1. Flexibility Of Learning

We often find that our learners are working full time and training in their ‘spare’ time. I think you can tell by your own life how hard it is to have time spare in a predictable way. By having short sharp lessons on your phone that you can watch while the kids are at football practice it makes it ideal to absorb bigger topics in smaller chunks.

2. Higher Retention Rate

In the electrical training that you will undertake different people need different topics breaking down. For example you might be very quick with your maths but need more time for design or testing, whereas the next person may need something different. This way you can watch the areas again and again that suit you.

3. Time Efficient

We do love a longer YouTube video for some topics but short and sharp with clear titles will help in your studies.

Micro-learning is ideal if you need to brush up on certain skills before a full length lesson as well as shorter revision topics.

4. More Engaging

If you are able to watch two or three minutes on your phone in between other shorts you stop doom scrolling and start being more productive. I like to think that our videos are short and enjoyable as well as being relaxed.

Our viewers are able to comment on videos and get real-time responses as well as new content to suit their learning style.

5. Personalised Learning

With micro-learning you can pick and choose the subjects that you want to focus on. By following overall subjects you can then pinpoint the areas you need revision for.

Practical Applications Of Micro-Learning In Training Centres

We like to keep our class sizes small and having micro-learning resources alongside this seems to really help adult learners.

It can be important to use a blended approach to learning in a more modern way to suit learners who are working alongside studying. Using resources on your phone alongside your classroom studies can help with revision.

Not everyone can create the perfect study space at home so a quick micro lesson in between life commitments can be a real game changer.
