How to Create the Perfect Study Space as an Adult Learner

Being an adult learner in many ways is easier than when we are younger, but finding that perfect space in your home to study can be hard but so important for your success.

With the support of those in your family being a mature learner can really make sense and there are so many people we have taught who have made being an electrician their second career due to being able to study and work flexibly. Although we all have to acknowledge how hard this balancing act is.

What Makes a Perfect Study Space for An Adult Learner

When I think of the perfect learning space for an adult I think of it as a protected space, where you can come home from a days work and then get into the right head space to learn or review your notes etc. An organised space with your resources close to hand that has limited disruption.

Practical Tips for Creating a Study Space

Nobody lives inside an instagram story so we need to be realistic when it comes to building your ideal study space. Family, pets and all sorts of outside distractions can get in the way of your learning. It is not always possible to have a room with a desk and adequate lighting but hopefully these tips will help.

Choose a Dedicated Space

I find it helpful to have the same spot for revision, studying and online lessons. It does not have to be a desk but somewhere that you can leave your books and notepads is to be preferred. Once your children or family see that you are in your spot they gradually get the hang of leaving you to it, for a bit at least.

I’ve seen people use the garage or shed for online lessons and I can really try to urge against this as variations in temperature and noise levels when it rains make it quite unpleasant to be in that space.

Try to Keep Distractions to a Minimum

It is easier said than done when you are an adult studying, however sitting with the family to discuss what you will need before you start the course will help. When you have a space, even a spot on the kitchen table it helps, but nothing will be perfect.

Mobile phones can be distracting but also good sources of information depending on the educational videos or resources you may be accessing. Use of the do not disturb button can help.

Sticking to a Set Time To Study

Some people find the routine helpful and it links to the earlier point about limiting distractions if after book at bedtime it is time for homework for Daddy, then the kids may be more understanding. A lot of learners we teach have been on the tools all day so coming home for a quick shower, some food and then straight into 20 minutes of study works well.

I use my phone to set a twenty minute timer and then challenge myself to see how much I can achieve in this time. I find as an adult learner that this means I can be as productive as possible and then have time for family commitments as well. Little and often works very well for me.

Other people may need longer to switch into learning mode and setting the room up with 8-9pm as the time for revision can help as well.

Make it Comfortable, But Not Too Comfortable

I like my cushions in my revision area but do have to admit that a bit too much comfort will link to a higher level of nap time! I think if everything is within easy reach this adds to the comfort levels without making it too relaxing!

Organise Your Resources

We all know how many books electricians need but having your regs, on-site guide and notepads with you will help. I love a highlighter and little post-it note tabs to helps guide my studies as well as calculator rather than my phone. Those sorts of resources are key but so is a decent cuppa and maybe some biscuits - although most people advise against this!

Build It To Your Learning Style

I like to listen to music when I study, there are plenty of relaxing classical music type playlists and this can help to give you timings for study as well. But I also like to listen to something a bit more talkative if I am working through invoices so Fix radio couldn’t be better there! Other people find silence works well when revising.
