7 Ways Small Class Sizes Help Adult Learners
We find that by keeping the class sizes smaller we can spend more individual time with our learners. This directly impacts our success rates as well as our making people more likely to return for their next course.
Increased Achievement Rates
This is not just true with adults, a government research paper finds that there is a positive link between smaller class sizes and attainment. This is for school aged children but the links are suggested to adults.
From our own experience we see that when classes are kept below 10 we see more first time passes.
2. More Questions Asked and Answered
Have you ever sat on a training course and thought ‘no, you lost me’ but have no chance to speak up? We see a lot more interactions and far fewer quiet learners when we have class sizes of 10 or below. Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question, just the one you don’t ask.
3. We Get To Know You
Say you’ve booked onto a course with 15 other electricians and you don’t cover half of the range of works they do, well how can the teaching be more tailored to you?
If however we have spoken with you to ensure it is the right course and the right time for you, then we can put things into a context that works for you.
There is time to share first hand real life experiences and best practices as well which is fantastic for building a culture of excellence in private training.
4. More One To One Time
It is unlikely that we all remember our time from college and all that we learned in class. So if you are on a 2391-52 course and need to remember the maths for verification it could be harder to get some focused teacher time in a larger class.
By having more focused time it can help you to overcome a thing called skills fade, where maybe you remember it from when you were in school but it has been many years. This means we can give you the same task on more than one occasion.
5. You Have A Better Class Atmosphere
If I was in teacher speak I may call it a cohesive classroom of peer to peer support, but as I’m not it is just a nicer place to be.
We get more engagement and more help from others. If we are in the workshop learning new tool skills we see so many examples of best practice being passed on from one learner to another.
This idea of working together then feeds into other areas and adult learners oftern make Whatsapp groups where they can carry on helping each other. Sometimes even notifying one another of big jobs coming up.
6. Less Likely To Have Time Wasters
I’ve seen in adult training where you have people who have to attend cpd courses and have been voluntold that they will be attending. This can be frustrating for those who actually want to be in the class and have paid.
In a smaller class it is harder to hide and the teacher (me!) will be able to get them involved and actively learning.
7. More Time For Extra Learning
In general the whole class moves forward more quickly with a better depth of understanding. In our private training provider the reality of this is we can spend longer on subjects.
This means stretch and challenge but for anyone who is paying for their course it also means more for their money.
This is important to us as we do not have any desire to allow you to pass without having a good level of understanding. I don’t think there are many worse feelings then leaving a course none the wiser than when you joined.
